2008 Alumni Award Winners
On Saturday, October 4, 2008 during the annual Alumni Awards Ceremony at Homecoming Weekend, the Brockport Alumni Association will honor the following individuals for their contributions and accomplishments.
Hall of Heritage
The Association’s most prestigious award, designed to honor alumni who have distinguished themselves by their contributions to the Alumni Association and/or the College and/or their community and/or have shown outstanding professional achievement.
Daniel Bernstein ’76: Daniel Bernstein has served Bel Fuse, Inc. as President since June 1992 and as Chief Executive Officer since May 2001. He previously served as Vice President (1985-1992) and Treasurer (1986-1992) and has served as a Director since 1986. He has occupied other positions with the Company since 1978. He was appointed Managing Director of the Company’s Macau subsidiary during 1991. He is currently a director of Bel Fuse Ltd., Bel Fuse Macau LDA, and Bel Stewart GmbH. Bel Fuse is a driving force in the future of global connectivity, manufacturing quality components for the computer, networking and telecommunications industries. Dan has been a major proponent of the alumni soccer program at the College since his first days after graduation, organizing alumni participation in major national tournaments across the country. Dan also was instrumental in helping to fund the upgrading of the College's soccer "pitch" as part of the naming of "A. Huntley Parker Jr. Field" back in 2005. Dan received his bachelor’s degree in 1976 from The College at Brockport.
Jane Clark ’68: Jane has distinguished herself with extraordinary professional achievement and service to her Alma Mater. Jane recently returned to Brockport as a respected major lecturer in her field. She currently serves as professor and chair of the department of kinesiology and professor in the neuroscience and cognitive sciences program at the University of Maryland, College Park. She has authored 22 books, co-editing 20 chapters and 46 refereed journal publications. Jane was a member of the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD) as an undergraduate student and has continued as a member since 1975. She was honored with the outstanding teacher award, as scholar lecturer and as the McCloy Lecturer. She also served as president of the North American Society for the Psychology of Sport and Physical Activity. In 1993 Jane was elected Fellow of the American Academy of Kinesiology and Physical Education, a society limited to 125 active scholars in the field of kinesiology. She currently serves as president of the Academy. Jane earned her bachelor’s degree in health and physical education from the College at Brockport in 1968, her master’s degree in physical education from the University of Washington in 1970 and her PhD in physical education (motor development) from the University of Wisconsin – Madison in 1976.
James Jubilee Sr. ’57: James has served his community, the teaching field and The College at Brockport in a variety of capacities over the years. James is a retired teacher/guidance counselor who served in the education field for 34 years, most recently at Woodland Senior High School where he was guidance counselor for junior and senior high school students and special education students from 1970 to 1991. James also served as director of the boys and girls club and supervisor of summer camp in Mamaroneck, NY, counselor at the National Collegiate Athletic Program at Manhattan College and group counselor for women at the Bedford Correctional Center. He has belonged to various organizations such as the NAACP and the New York State Guidance and Counseling Association, among many others. James has received many awards and honors such as Who’s Who in Black Officials, various outstanding teacher awards, leadership awards and a citation from the state assembly for outstanding service to the Mount Vernon community, to name a few. James also has volunteered his service as a Brockport alumnus by representing the College at college nights in the Westchester area and returning for his 50th reunion in 2007 and representing his class at the annual tree planting ceremony. James received his bachelor’s degree in education from the College at Brockport in 1957, a master’s degree in elementary education from Hunter College in 1961 and another master’s degree in guidance and counseling from the Teacher’s College of Columbia, in 1964.
Honors for Outstanding Service
Designed to honor those who have (a) given outstanding service to the Alumni Association/the College and/or (b) given outstanding community service and/or (c) shown outstanding professional achievement.
Lynne Keefer ’83: Lynne’s professional achievement and service to the College make her an exceptional candidate for the Outstanding Service Award. Lynne currently serves as literacy specialist, mentor teacher and teacher on special assignment for the Greece Central School District. She also is an adjunct professor in the graduate literacy program at St. John Fisher College. Lynne has been teaching since 1972. For the past several years, Lynne has worked with The College at Brockport literacy graduate students who were completing their internships with the Greece Central School District. She served as a consultant for the Brockport student teachers and their supervising teachers. Lynne has received many awards and honors such as the College Reading Association’s Annual National Master’s Thesis Award and the Reading Educator Emeriti Award from The College at Brockport. Lynne is a member of the International Reading Association, the New York State Reading Association & the Rochester Area Literacy Council and the Rochester Area Language Arts Coordinators, to name a few. Lynne continues to provide leadership and assistance to the many education and reading-related programs, associations and committees in the community. Lynne received her bachelor’s degree in elementary education from SUNY Oswego in 1972 and her master’s degree in education and reading from The College at Brockport in 1983.
Donal Stiner ’71: Donal has served his community in an outstanding fashion over the years. Donal worked for the City of Rochester department of parks and recreation for more than 36 years where he worked at such playgrounds as Edgerton Park, J.P. Riley, No. 7 School, Norton Village, Avenue D and Carter Street. During his time at these sites, Donal established the first co-ed softball leagues and formed and administered countless other leagues and athletic activities. He’s served as basketball coach, baseball coach and pee wee football coach for various volunteer organizations over the years. Donal was elected to the Rochester Senior Slow Pitch Softball Association (RSSSA) Hall of Fame in 2005 as a contributor. In 2007, Donal created an Adult Recreation Association (ARA) Board of Directors to facilitate a Hall of Fame. This was accomplished in 2007 with the first class of 14 members. Don was elected to the ARA Hall of Fame in 2007 as its founder, programmer and participant. Don is a proud alumnus of The College at Brockport. Three of his four children also are alumni with the fourth a current Brockport student. Donal received his bachelor’s degree in history and recreation in 1971 and his master’s degree in history and recreation in 1975, both from The College at Brockport.
Citation of Appreciation
Honors those individuals who have demonstrated sustained commitment through their services to and/or affiliation with the Alumni Association.
Cathy Pilliteri Catalino ’53: Cathy’s love of and commitment to Brockport make her an excellent recipient of the Citation of Appreciation. Cathy has served as teacher, substitute teacher, day care and nursery school director and teacher, real estate agent and business owner over the years and still had time for her Alma Mater. Cathy is chair of the class of 1953 memorial book committee, researching, designing and producing a book that is housed in the college archives. She also helped to digitize the book into a CD. It also includes information on deceased classmates. Cathy has attended many class reunions for the class of 1953, was a member of the steering committee for the 50th class reunion, chair of the reunion dinner, variety show and hospitality room at Alumni House. Cathy also finds time to serve the community. She is the president of the Women’s Club in Webster and has been a member since 1985. She belongs to many organizations, including the Catholic Women’s Club, Rochester Federation of Women’s Clubs and Willow Twig, to name a few. Cathy received her bachelor’s degree in elementary education in 1953 from The College at Brockport.
Recent Alumnus
Designed to honor graduates who have received their bachelor’s degree within the past 15 yeas and who have (a) developed a positive relationship with the Alumni Association/the College and/or (b) given outstanding community service and/or (c) shown outstanding professional achievement.
Lowell Wisdom ’00: Lowell has had an extraordinary career with Barnes & Noble. Lowell began his time at Brockport in 1995, pursuing a degree in business and spent his time at Brockport as a campus leader, community builder and bookstore employee. Lowell served as resident assistant, president of the Caribbean Club, member of Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity and bookstore student manager, all while studying to obtain his degree. Upon graduating in 2000, Lowell went straight to work in the corporate offices of Barnes & Noble. He began in the information technology department and since then, has received three promotions and is currently the supervisor of the Support Services Center where he has a staff of 12 employees. Lowell credits his Brockport education and his experience at the College bookstore with much of his personal and professional success. When not working, Lowell is president of his church youth group, plays guitar at Sunday services and continues to stay in touch with his Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity brothers. Lowell received his bachelor’s degree in business administration in 2000 from The College at Brockport.
