Head Coach: Justin Beach

Justin Beach was named head baseball coach in June of 2008 after one season as the interim head coach. Beach takes over a program that has emerged as one of the top teams in the New York Region and continued the program’s recent success in 2008 with a seventh consecutive trip to the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Tournament and a berth in the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Tournament leading the Golden Eagles to the championship round in each tournament.

Beach, a 2003 graduate of The College at Brockport, won the most games as a first-year head coach when he led the Golden Eagles to a 26-19-1 record in 2008. Only Dick Bonalewicz who won 18 games in his first season in 1975 and Bob Mollenhauer who was victorious in 16 contests in 1980 won more than 15 games in their rookie seasons as head coach.

The 26 victories tied for the third best in school history as the team was led by NABC/Rawlings First-Team All-Region and SUNYAC Player of the Year Rob Maxwell. The senior pitcher and first baseman was also a SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence honoree and voted to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District team.

As a player, Beach captained the Golden Eagles to a then school-record 31 wins as a senior outfielder in 2003. He has been an assistant coach with the team for the past four seasons helping the team to a 108-64 record, four appearances in the SUNYAC Tournament and a trip to the College World Series in 2004.

At age 27, Beach remains one of the youngest NCAA baseball coaches in the country.

After graduating in 2003, Beach accepted a position as a graduate assistant in the Department of Physical Education and Sport and eventually earned his master’s degree in Athletic Administration. Additionally, he served as interim assistant athletic director for the 2006-07 academic year while former baseball coach and assistant athletic director Mark Rowland took a leave of absence from the administrative position.

A graduate of traditional Section II power Columbia High School in East Greenbush, NY, Beach went on to star at Hudson Valley Community College. He led the Vikings to a Regional Championship and a fifth-place finish in the 2001 NJCAA World Series before transferring to Brockport as a junior. Beach’s senior year was his best as a Golden Eagle, as that year’s team captured an ECAC championship.

Hitting primarily from the leadoff spot, he hit .307 with eight doubles, four homers, and 24 runs batted in. He also went 8-for-11 in stolen bases and performed brilliantly on defense in center and right field. A leader on and off the field, Beach was named team captain despite the fact it was only his second year in the program.

Assistant Coaches

Ory Mee

Ory Mee joined The College at Brockport Baseball staff as an assistant in 2007 after a very successful career as baseball coach at Hilton High School. He brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to the Golden Eagles.

Mee is a 1972 graduate of Brockport with a degree in Physical Education. He had previously taught physical education and coached baseball at Hilton High School for 31 years. He played two years at Jamestown Community College before transferring to Brockport and playing one year for the Golden Eagles.

“I can stay involved in a sport I enjoy while sharing my experience with a group of great young athletes at my alma mater” says Mee.

Mee works primarily with the infielders, catchers and hitters.

Jim DeBay

New to the coaching staff is former Golden Eagle Jim Debay. He is a 2006 graduate of The College at Brockport and holds a degree in Physical Education, and currently is pursuing a Master’s degree in Recreation and Leisure at Brockport.

Debay played two years with Brockport after transferring from Monroe Community College in 2004. A career .266 hitter in 79 games in two seasons with the Golden Eagles, he registered 72 hits, scored 44 runs, hit 19 doubles and had 42 runs batted in.

His 19 career doubles currently ranks as the 11th-highest total in school history and his 12 doubles in a season is tied for sixth-highest. In 2006, Debay had 163 at bats, the fourth most in a season at Brockport. An outfielder in college, Debay works primarily with that group and the hitters.

Jake Dennstedt

Joining the Golden Eagles in 2008 is Jake Dennstedt. He is a 2007 graduate of The College at Brockport with a Business Administration degree. Dennstedt works with the pitching staff.

As a player, Dennstedt compiled a 10-5 record in two seasons with the green and gold. He recorded five complete games and over 121 innings, he allowed only 36 earned runs and struck out 66. His six wins in 2007 led the team and earned him NABC/Rawlings First-Team All-Region and First-Team All-SUNYAC honors. The pitcher was also named National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Pitcher of the Week early in his senior season.

Dennstedt worked with the Brockport River Bats of the New York Collegiate Baseball League (NYCBL) in 2007 as the pitching coach and will take over the head coaching duties in 2008.

Casey Scott

Scott joined the Brockport Baseball program in the 2008 season and worked as an assistant with the pitching staff. The former Golden Eagle graduated in the spring of 2008 with a History degree.

On the diamond, Scott recorded a perfect 9-0 record in his two seasons with Brockport. He logged over 93 career innings allowing 30 earned runs and 23 walks, while striking out 59 batters. He was named to the SUNYAC All-Conference team in 2007.

Scott is a transfer from St. Thomas Aquinas College and Dutchess Community College before attending Brockport in 2005. Scott will be an assistant coach with the Brockport Riverbats in 2008.

Mark Morlock

Morlock joined the coaching staff as a volunteer coach in 2008 and assisted with the infielders and hitters. He is currently a Physical Education major at The College at Brockport.

He was a four-year player for the Brockport baseball team where he compiled 30 runs scored, 29 hits and 20 runs batted in. In 2007, Morlock hit .309 with two doubles, a triple and drove in 12 runs.

Morlock was part of 108 wins over his four years in the green and gold, including the 2004 squad that advanced to the College World Series.
