Ben Wineburg

Head Coach: Ben Wineburg

Ben Wineburg enters his eighth season as head coach of the men's lacrosse team. Wineburg took over the coaching duties in 2000, the first varsity season since 1979. The 2007 team finished with a 7-6 record marking the best record since restarting the program in 2000-01.

The 2007 season ended with defender David Shield being voted the SUNYAC Rookie of the year as the Golden Eagles finished with a winning record for the first time since the program returned to the varsity level in 2000. Fellow freshmen, Pat Reilly and Adam Drypolcher led the Brockport offense scoring 75 of the team's 190 points and 52 of the 119 goals. Senior Joe Aquilina was an honorable mention All-SUNYAC selection. Shield was the team's defensive MVP while Drypolcher and Reilly shared the offensive MVP and Shield was the Ground Ball Award winner. Dave McAlpin and Danny Dressman shared the Stephen Falcone Coaches Award.

In 2006, the Golden Eagles set the school record for consecutive victories in a season en route to 5-8 record. Defenseman Henry Kuperus was an All-SUNYAC selection for the second straight season. Kuperus and Mike Bond were voted the co-Defensive MVP for the team while Jordan Conrad was named the Offensive MVP. Jay Canaday was the Ground Ball Award winner and Casey LeFevre and Brian Harris shared the Stephen Falcone Coaches Award.

In 2005, Bobby Magrin was selected to play in the collegiate North/South All-Star game after scoring 13 goals and 12 assists in just nine games. He was a second-team All-SUNYAC selection. Mike Bond and Henry Kuperus were All-SUNYAC selections and shared the team defensive MVP award. Anthony Ventresca was named the team's offensive MVP and scored a team-leading 31 points with 14 goals and 17 assists. Jeff Morse was the ground ball award recipient while Steve Reynolds and Logan Gaffney were honored with the Stephen Falcone Coaches Award.

In 2004, the team finished up with two wins out of the last three home games. In addition, the Golden Eagles gave defending SUNYAC Champion, Cortland, a tough battle at home. On the season, sophomore John Tanner led the team with 16 goals and was second with 23 points, while scoring four man-up goals. Junior Rob Siddell, a SUNYAC All-star Selection, had a team high 25 points and also the team with 12 assists. The team finished with a 4-8 record.

The 2003 season, Mike Beach and Tanner were the Golden Eagles top scorers in their rookie campaigns. Beach scored 27 goals and added three assists while Tanner notched 11 goals with 18 assists. Goalkeeper Jim Amell had six starts last season and recorded 125 saves (.604 save percentage) in 477 minutes of play. John Contratto had seven starts stopping 57 shots (.570 save percentage) in 270 minutes.

In 2002, the Golden Eagles became a member of the SUNY Athletic Conference (SUNYAC). The conference includes national powers SUNY Cortland, SUNY Geneseo and SUNY Oneonta, as well as Oswego, Plattsburgh and Potsdam. Morrisville joins the conference as a full-time member in 2008.

In 2001, Brockport went 2-7 in a nine game non-conference schedule which included a 16-4 win over Medaille College in the first Brockport home game since the 1979 season. The Golden Eagles also got a late season 14-10 win over SUNYIT.

A 1996 graduate of Nazareth College, Wineburg led Nazareth to a 1996 national championship, the second of three national titles in Nazareth's lacrosse history. The two-time All-American goalie was named the Division III Player of the Year and was the MVP of the national championship game while leading Nazareth to an 11-10 overtime win over Washington College in 1996.

"Ben is an enthusiastic, energetic individual who is a perfect fit for us," said Linda J. Case, Brockport's Director of Intercollegiate Athletics. "He came from a great team at Nazareth and played for a coach, (Scott Nelson) who knows what it takes to start from scratch and build a winner."

Wineburg graduated from Nazareth with a degree in business administration and a concentration in pre-law. He served as an assistant in 1997, when Nazareth won its third NCAA crown, and again assisted Nelson in 1998. In 1999, he worked as a graduate assistant at Alfred University. He returned to Nazareth as an assistant in the 2000 season when the Golden Flyers lost in the national semifinals to Middlebury College to finish with a record of 13-1.

A native of Auburn, NY, Wineburg holds a handful of other Nazareth records. In 1996, he compiled a 7.59 goals-against average to rank eighth nationally. His school-record save percentage of .693 was fifth nationally. He also holds the mark for save percentage in a career.

In addition to being a two-time All-American for the Golden Flyers, Wineburg was captain of Nazareth's 1996 national championship team and played in the North/South Division III All-Star Game. He also was the national Goalie of the Year as a senior. As both a junior and senior, he was the team's Defensive MVP.
