English Department

Welcome to the Department of English. The department offers a BA and BS in undergraduate studies, and an MA in graduate studies. The Department of English is justly proud of the quality of its faculty and students. Our faculty includes scholars and creative writers with international reputations. Among the faculty in the department are four recipients of the Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Teaching.

Our graduates have gone on to a wide variety of successful careers. Many of our students prepare themselves for teaching at the elementary, secondary or college level. However, some of our majors enter Master of Fine Arts programs and become successful writers. Some pursue degrees in law and business. English majors will become successful in many fields that will come into being in this new century, because courses in the major enhance crucial skills in communication and critical thinking that future employers will view as valuable in their staff.

A special feature of undergraduate and graduate study at SUNY Brockport is the Writers Forum, which annually brings writers and literary personalities of the highest caliber to the campus for readings, lectures, classroom presentations, informal discussions and interviews. Among the 300 guest authors who have lectured and whose interviews are maintained in our collection of videotapes are Andrei Voznesensky, Archibald MacLeish, Malcolm Cowley, Nadine Gordimer, Sir Stephen Spender, Isaac Bashevis Singer, Derek Walcott and Seamus Heaney.

Recent English Department student award winners include Nancy Caronia, the Blaine DeLancey Award winner; Nancy Caronia (for free form) and Joseph Gian (for traditional form), the Calvin Rich Poetry Award winners; Joanne Bauer, Melissa Larkin, Michaela Kaiser, and Sara Butryn, the Rose and Earl Ingersoll Award winners; Valerie Dimino, the Department Scholar; and Matthew McCrossen, the Morgan Award winner.
