In support of the College at Brockport’s strategic plan, we have started the Diversity Certification Program to foster innovation and performance excellence through staff/faculty development, leading to increased measures of student satisfaction, academic and developmental integration and program completions/graduation rates.
Participants enrolled in the Diversity Certification Program will receive formal cultural and academic training on successfully engaging and interacting with students of the following 11 targeted cultural/demographic groups and subject areas:
- Diversity & Inclusion 101 (Overview)
- Asian/Pacific Islander
- Hispanic, Caucasian
- Native American (Indian)
The focus of the cultural subject area trainings will be to increase “cultural intelligence” of participants with respect to identified demographic groups, but also highlight the “intersections” in which the demographic populations share interests, value sets and cultural norms. Attendees will be provided examples of effective cultural strategies, improving the quality of student engagement, interaction and communication. Training sessions will be held primarily one (1) day a month, for a three (3) hour timeslot, incorporating a cultural content lecture, dialogue (Q&A) and an interactive learning component within each setting.
