Description

The Master of Science in Education (MSEd.) in Higher Education Administration (HEA) emphasizes cultivating administrators, adept at building relationships, management skills and foundational knowledge that will sustain them throughout their careers. The department is committed to providing a practical, knowledge based program that prepares higher education administrators for successful professional lives and careers and positions them well to pursue doctorates in the discipline. The 39-credit program curriculum emphasizes theoretically grounded practical application and culminates in a capstone experiential internship. The program is designed for students who work or aspire to work in a higher education setting requiring graduate level knowledge and credentials for career competence and advancement in the field of higher education.

The hybrid program format combines online (90%) courses punctuated with periodic intensive weekend, face-to-face (10%) classroom experiences (one, Friday night/Saturday day seminar per term), providing busy, adult, and often employed students with the best of both worlds - - online course rigor and convenience combined with the opportunity to leverage in-person learning experiences and foster extensive professional networks and relationships with peers and instructors. All-year (i.e., SU, FA, WI, and SP) scheduling allows students to fast-track their time-to-completion, in 15 - 18 months.

 

Admission to the Program

The application consists of:

  • A baccalaureate degree or higher from an accredited four-year college or university as noted above with a minimum undergraduate GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. The baccalaureate degree must reflect at least 120 credits.
  • Evidence of 3.0 or higher grade point average in an introductory college statistics course.
  • Two Reference Letters
  • Statement of Objective
  • Résumé

Program Requirements

Students must meet the College's standards for graduate study.

The program consists of 39 credits of coursework:

  • HEA 600 Foundations of Leadership in Higher Education
  • HEA 661, 662, & 663 Seminar in Higher Education
  • HEA 670 Organization and Administration of Higher Education
  • HEA 671 Legal Issues in Higher Education
  • HEA 672 Human Resource Management in Higher Education
  • HEA 673 Finance in Higher Education
  • HEA 674 Student in the College Environment
  • HEA 675 Planning Evaluation and Research
  • HEA 676 Assessment & Accreditation in Higher Education
  • HEA 677 The Two-Year College
  • HEA 678 Diversity in Higher Education
  • HEA 880 Higher Education Administrative Internship

Notes:

  1. If a student has not taken an undergraduate statistics course, the student must meet with his or her advisor to discuss this. The student must take and pass, with a "B" or better, an undergraduate statistics course approved by his or her advisor before taking HEA 675 and 676. This undergraduate credit will not be counted in the credits required for the MSEd degree.
  2. Students must take HEA 600 in their first semester of study.
  3. Since students must satisfy all degree requirements within five years of date of matriculation, it is recommended that students take at least six credits per term (FA, SP, SU).
  4. Academic credit is earned for grades of "A," "A-," "B+," "B," "B-," "C+," "C," or "S."
  5. An overall cumulative Brockport graduate GPA of at least 3.0 is required for graduation.
  6. Students who have completed at least nine graduate credits at Brockport and whose cumulative Brockport graduate GPA falls below 3.0 are placed on Academic Probation I.

Student Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the program, students will:

  1. Exhibit understanding and application of effective leadership and administration skills.
  2. Be adept at analyzing and developing solutions to complex issues faced by higher education organizations.
  3. Be able to investigate and explore the ways in which global issues impact higher education organizational operations and strategy. 
  4. Recognize ethical dilemmas and their impact on higher education organizations, and their stakeholders.
