Natalie Sarrazin holds a Ph.D. in Ethnomusicology from the University of Maryland, College Park, and a Masters degree in Music Education from Peabody Conservatory at Johns Hopkins University. Dr. Sarrazin’s area of teaching and scholarship includes ethnomusicology, Indian popular music, and music education. Dr. Sarrazin is a prolific scholar and researcher, with publications including Problem-Based Learning for the College Music Classroom (Routledge, 2018), Music in Contemporary Indian Film: Memory, Voice and Identity (co-author J. Beaster-Jones, Routledge, 2016), Music and the Child (Open SUNY, 2016), and Indian Music for the Classroom (Rowman Littlefield, MENC, 2008). She has chapters in two Oxford Handbooks, one on Political Communication and Music (2018) and one on Children’s Musical Cultures (2012). Recent articles include “Divine Fusion: Sufi Music with a Rock ‘n’ Roll Soul in Hindi Cinema’s Rockstar” Journal of Performing Islam 2017), “Teaching Embodied Musickmaking: Pedagogical Perspectives from South Asian Music and Dance” The College Music Forum, (co-author S. Morelli, 2016) and her most popular article, “Celluloid Love Songs: Musical Modus Operandi and the Dramatic Aesthetics of Romantic Hindi Film” Popular Music Journal, Cambridge. She is currently working on a book for Routledge’s Focus on World Music Series on Indian popular music, expected out in 2019.

Natalie is currently an Associate Professor and Music Studies Coordinator at SUNY Brockport, SUNY. Internationally active in music education, in 2015 Natalie co-founded and is Executive Director of the Western Music Education Association in India (WMEA), a non-profit music education organization affiliated with the US’s NAfME, the National Association for Music Education that is dedicated to supporting and training music educators in India.
