Dear SUNY Brockport Community:

I hope you are enjoying the summer months. Here on campus we are busy preparing for the start of a vibrant fall semester. The key to returning to the kind of campus life we experienced prior to the start of the pandemic is the COVID-19 vaccine. Thankfully, as more and more of our community becomes vaccinated, we have been able to lift many of our COVID-19 restrictions.

As you’re likely aware, New York State has mandated that all SUNY students taking in-person classes become vaccinated for COVID-19 once one of the vaccines receives full approval from the Food and Drug Administration. That approval is expected to come this fall.

In addition to this coming mandate, SUNY Brockport is now joining several other SUNY institutions in requiring that residential students and any student who participates on a SUNY Brockport athletic team, including club sports, be vaccinated for COVID-19 by the first day of classes on Aug. 30.

This will enable us to return our classrooms to full capacity, eliminate weekly testing requirements and most masking restrictions for vaccinated individuals, and to bring back the SUNY Brockport traditions and events we very much missed last year. The requirement will also allow our student athletes to travel, practice and compete without the restrictions they had to endure last year.

Students who have begun their vaccination series or have scheduled their first vaccination will be eligible to start the semester as scheduled. Please note that these individuals will have to follow policies and procedures for unvaccinated individuals until they are fully vaccinated (two weeks after their final dose), including the pre-arrival testing requirement. In order to assist our students with this requirement, we will be hosting several vaccination clinics on campus leading up to the start of the semester. More information will be forthcoming shortly on the dates and times of these clinics. Our website also offers a link to help you find a vaccine appointment near you.

We strongly urge students to become vaccinated as soon as possible to ensure a smooth return to campus next month.

SUNY Brockport will be accepting our standard medical and religious exemptions from this requirement, utilizing the same process that exists for other required immunizations.

We will be sharing more information about our fall reopening plans in the near future.

Thank you for all you’ve done to Protect the Nest throughout this pandemic. We eagerly await the start of the fall semester.

Sincerely,

President Macpherson
