Designers from Across the SUNY System Display Their Work in New Exhibition
January 30, 2020 10:00 am–5:00 pm
Invitational Exhibition co-curated by Tim Massey, Gallery Director and professor, and Mitchell Christensen, adjunct faculty.
Colleagues from across the State University of New York system will exhibit their recent work — graphic or otherwise — for a survey of contemporary design. The SUNY Design Invitational will open with a reception on Thursday, January 30, from 4–6 pm, and continue through March 6. The Tower Fine Arts Center Gallery is located at 180 Holley Street, Brockport, and the exhibit is free and open to the public.
From utilitarian salt shakers on a cafeteria table to the most luxe logos and letterheads, design is prevalent in our everyday lives, whether we realize it or not. And, as always, artists and designers receive their inspiration from any number of sources, both likely and unlikely. A case in point comes from Judy Livingston, associate professor of graphic design at Alfred University, who was preparing a submission for an international traveling poster exhibition that was to graphically express the word “ubuntu, which is a South African word that means humanity towards others.” Livingston’s entry was a “typographic illustration inspired by the double helix structure of DNA. The fact that all human beings share more than 99% of their DNA is testimony to the reality of our global community and the insignificance of our differences.” Livingston received an Honorable Mention citation for her work.
In addition to Livingston, other participants in the Invitational include Mitchell Christensen, The College at Brockport; Stephanie Dinkins, SUNY Stony Brook; Gerkhan Ersan, Binghamton University; Anne Galperin, SUNY New Paltz; Szilvia Kadas, SUNY Cortland; and Warren Lehrer, SUNY Purchase.
