Dr. Barb LeSavoy Coauthors Book Chapter
The book chapter, Seneca Falls, Strategic Mythmaking, opens the edited collection , Feminist Connections: Rhetoric and Activism across Time, Space, and Place (2021), Edited by K Fredlund, K. Hauman, and J Oullette, The University of Alabama Press.
Dr. LeSavoy coauthored the chapter with Dr. Jill Swiencicki, St John Fisher College, Dr. Maria Brandt, Monroe Community College, and Dr. Deborah Uman, St John Fisher College.
The chapter seeks to understand the core practices of the 1848 Women's Rights Convention held in Seneca Falls NY and to transform them in the Biennial Seneca Falls Dialogues (SFD) founded in 2007. First, from the perspective of location rhetorics, the authors discuss the pull of place and history on SFD participants. Next, they examine whole-group activities that seek to build feminist connections through participatory practices. In each, the authors consider the affordances and limitations of these frameworks for a politics of relation around suffrage history and ask how to employ the story of Seneca Falls without compromising other histories and priorities, and how to understand the value of unification while advocating contemporary, intersectional feminist voices.
